Low Dose Methylene Blue... You suggest 5mg as a low dose...how many drops equals 5mg?

Continuing the discussion from Low Dose Methylene Blue:

You suggest 5mg as a small and proper dosage of Methylene Blue. How many drops equal 5mg??

Hello! Brandon & Rich here from the Clinical Team. Thanks for your question about methylene blue (MB) dosing. When it comes to determining how many drops are needed to reach a 5 mg dose, it depends entirely on the concentration of the liquid supplement you’re using.

Many methylene blue supplements come in concentrations like 0.5%, 1%, or even lower for human use. For example:

  • A 1% solution contains 10 mg of methylene blue per 1 mL.

  • A typical drop from a dropper is approximately 0.05 mL, meaning a single drop from a 1% solution delivers about 0.5 mg.

  • So, to reach a 5 mg dose with a 1% solution, you’d need approximately 10 drops. If your MB concentration is 0.5% or lower, you may have to double or otherwise appropriately increase the drops needed.

We use an oral capsule for MB, which is nice in that it has much less blue dye effects that often stain the mouth or teeth.

Here are a few important notes to keep in mind:

  1. Only pharmaceutical or laboratory-grade methylene blue intended for human use should be used as a supplement. Many industrial or fish-grade solutions are not safe for ingestion.

  2. Dosing can vary based on the intended use: longevity vs antimicrobial vs clinical/emergent, as well as tolerance, body weight, and individual health status.

  3. Methylene blue can interact with SSRIs and other medications due to its MAOI activity, so it’s essential to consult with a knowledgeable health professional before starting or adjusting a dose.

Thank you so much now I have a better understanding. Claudia
