Is it normal to be feeling full after eating 24 hours after your last dose of acarbose?
Hello! This is Brandon from the Clinical Team here at Healthspan.
It might depend a little bit based on your diet and timing of your acarbose dosing. A good estimate of carb intake that might warrant acarbose dosing would be in the 20-30g range.
But, what you’re describing can be normal. Acarbose slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates, so some of that food passes into the colon where it’s fermented by gut bacteria. This process can leave you feeling full, bloated, or gassy even the next day, since the fermentation can continue long after the dose itself has worn off.
Most people find these effects improve over time as the body adjusts, and they can often be managed by eating smaller portions of carbs or spreading them out during the day. If the fullness is severe or doesn’t improve, let us know so we can talk about adjusting your dose or meal strategy.
If you are having GI distress still, it might be worthwhile to experiment with pausing for a few days to verify this is the cause of your feeling full.
